Steps in the Organization of Deviance

1. Primary Deviance

2. Secondary Deviance

3. Tertiary Deviance

One form of tertiary deviance is the organization in deviant advocacy groups

·  Deviant advocacy groups provide critical information for the identification and the acceptance of a label.

·  The group provides self esteem to people who identify themselves with the interest of the group.

·  An additional source of self esteem is provided by the differentiation between ingroup and outgroup.

Dimensions of Deviance

(A) The normative-deviant-illegal continuum

(B) Acquired or ascribed form of deviance, and

(C) Goffman's  (1959) differentiation of discreditable and discredited forms of deviance.
