Koss, Mary P., Christine A. Gidycz, and Nadine Wisnewski. 1987. The Scope of Rape: Incidence and Prevalence of Sexual Aggression and Victimization in a National Sample of Higher Education Students. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 55:162-170.

Overheads

One feminist perspective: The existence of false rape accusations constitutes discriminatory harassment toward women (see Grano 1990).

Depending on the operationalization, method of investigation and the ideology of the researcher,

rape of females is

·       to 99.99% underreported (Koss et al 1987)

·       or to 41% overreported (Kanin et al 1994).

Rape and attempted rape & sexual assault

UCR (FBI)   0.034  in 1000  (34 of 100,000)

NCVS           2.5     in 1000

Koss            38        in 1000 (within the last 6 month)

·       275 since age 14

If Koss et al were correct, only one in 1,117 females would report the crime to

·       a physician

·       psychologist

·       rape crisis

·       to other counseling centers

·       or the police

Gender similarities

Similarities between sexual violence of males against females and females against males occur depending on the operationalization, method, and ideology of the researchers.

1. Sexual coercion is not statistically different for college men and women

(Larimer et al 1999; Struckman-Johnson et al 1994; Anderson 1998, 1996; Clements-Schreiber et al 1998)

2. Just as males are less likely to admit being perpetrators of violence against females, females are less likely to admit being perpetrators of violence against males.

Gender differences

1.  up to now the concept of raping males was not included in the UCR definition of rape.

2.  male victims are far less likely than female victims to report rape authorities

3.  women are likely to be more openly offensive, less likely to use brute force and less likely to use drugs to obtain sexual contact.
