Studies of sexual behavior

Famous empirical studies of sexual behavior in conflict

1. Definition of Homosexual Behavior

 A)   Laumann et al. page 299: Distinction between Sexual Identity, Desire and Behavior

Make an Interpretation of Gender Differences in the Laumann et al Study

Interpretation of Gender Differences

Males are more likely to have a homosexual identity.

Question: Why?

Females are more likely to have homosexual desires, but males more often engage in homosexual behavior. Males who have a homosexual desire are more likely to engage in homosexual behavior.

Question: Why? Less inhibition? Does this disconfirm the thesis that males are more homophobic?

B) Kinsey (1948, p.638) differentiated sexual behavior on a hetero B homosexual continuum that is based on psychological reactions and overt experience.

0     exclusively heterosexual

1     predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual

2     predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual

3     equally heterosexual and homosexual

4     predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual

5     predominantly homosexual, but incidentally heterosexual

6     exclusively homosexual

Why is the same and opposite gender category higher and the same gender category lower in the last column?

3. Focus

Kinsey does not focus on the number of different partners.

Why do you think promiscuity was a bigger concern in the Lauman et al study?

I could not find a Table listing number of sex partners in the Kinsey report.
