Christine Palmer: "Parens Patriae: Many systems seem to have been put in place for society to "parent" children, such as the movie rating system. I want to identify laws and policies that have been developed to protect children and determine how effective these policies have been. This project would probably require a look at the history of parens patriae and its development over time along with identifying laws and policies."

Wednesday Nov 3 Rachel Melton: "To Spank or Not to Spank?  (Chapter 7) When does spanking cross the line and become abuse?  Does spanking have an effect on juvenile delinquency rates?  This would be an interesting topic since spanking has been given a more negative view lately.  I personally do not think spanking alone increases delinquency." 

Friday Nov 5  Crystal Bailey: "Family and juvenile delinquency:  what is the difference between the types of children who come from broken, unstable homes that do become delinquent and those that do not?  I want to explore this topic because it has always interested me to know why and how that happens.  Also because of some personal reasons, I really like this topic."

Elizabeth N. Henry: “Substance Abuse Among Juvenile Offenders.” This would cover: what is substance abuse and a description of the issue, what are the stats about this issue and which offenders are actually using drugs. It will also cover different methods on how to prevent substance abuse, different treatments for juvenile offenders, and what are the stats on the treatment programs."

Spring Dodd: "Drug use and Delinquency. Drug use among teens continues to grow.  Many teens turn to drugs for many different reasons.  These reasons could be experimentation, parents that are already involved in drugs, and peer pressure.  There are also teens that are hired by drug dealers to sell drugs among communities and friends that are also drug users."

Amber Harris: "Community treatment vs. Institutionalization. I would like to present a comparison of these two including the benefits and deficits of each. I intend to also research information about the general statistics of the two. Inlcuding information regarding age, gender, recidivism, and rehabilitation."

Townsend, Peter Berry: What are the institutionalized correction programs that we use for juveniles? Which of them do we find in Lubbock. Name them and give a brief description of their goals and their functioning.

Valerie Johnson: "how schools deal with the "Rebellious Teenagers".  they are put in an acceptable cage for days, weeks, in some cases months.  This is not teaching our children anything , but to see if they like the color black."


 

Dec 4 Police Work
 

Evan Ratcliff: "I would like to do my presentation on the law enforcement side of Juvenile Delinquency.  Under this topic, I would like to research and discuss the mindset of law enforcement officers when it comes to dealing with juvenile offendors.  I see these interactions as I work on the streets as a paramedic, and I believe it would be a great issue to research.  More specifically, I would like to present on LEOs treating kids more harshly to try and prove a point."

Patrick Truly: "Chapter 13 - Police Work The way police officers view juveniles; the differences in how they are processed through the correctional system; and how officers' prejudices affect youth outcomes."

Turner, Ramie Dawn: Investigate and report the opportunities of police officers in Lubbock to get a specialization in the treatment of juveniles.
