I. Course Description

IS 1100 is designed to increase your chance for success in college by assisting you in obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve your educational objectives. This course will give you a number of resources, tools and learning skills that enable you to take control of your education yourself. 


II. Course Outline

We Aug 30  Introduction and Campus Tour. We meet in our classroom Holden Hall 152.

Where is Holden Hall?  

 

Fr Sept 1  Orientation at the Advanced Technology Learning Center (ATLC).

We meet at 2 P.M. at the ATLC main desk. That is in the basement of the library. There are some sofas around.  From there we will go to the PC Training Lab II where I give you an idea about public computing at TTU.

Assignment: get your e-mail account before or after the orientation and sent me an e-mail from this account with your name (due Sept 5).

 

We Sept 6 Virtual Campus: Internet Resources. Computer Lab Holden Hall 105 (not ATLC)

Introduction in The Learning Brain, and internet based course supplementary.

Fr Sept 8 Library Research. We meet at the New Book section in the Main Library.

 

We Sept 13 Time Management and and Note Taking

Fr Sept 15 Library Database Demonstration.

We Sept 20 The Texas Tech Museum (you can click on the pictures for full size).

         

We will be at 2:00 at the information desk in the main lobby.  The Texas Tech Museum is located at the crossing of  4th and Indiana, that is West of Ranching Herding Center. Campus map. A shortcut: Go to the Botanic Garden across the Rec Center. Behind the Botanic Garden (seen from the Rec Center) you find an underpass that leads you below 4th to the International Center.  From here you can see the museum.

Requirements Grading Policy

Students will be assigned a grade in this class.

5%  Send one E-mail from your own TTU account stating IS1100 in the subject field   by September 5

20% Attendance (two absences are allowed)

20% Paper I: Library research paper.  September 20.

20% Visiting and presenting a University sponsored cultural event (exact presentation date depends on our class size, it will be announced). September 27.

20% Paper II: Stages of a paper. October 4.

15% Successful completion of the online course "The Learning Brain"  at:  http://webct.tltc.ttu.edu:8900    

 

Papers should be submitted double spaced, 1 on each side. Papers received after their due date will be marked down a half or a full grade depending on the amount of paper related material covered in the class session(s).

 

Presentations You should be able to make a 5 minute presentation describing a cultural event you attended.  You should not read.  Use some keywords instead.

be ready to give a 5 minute presentation by September 27.  I will pick on you, so be prepared, even if you might present at one of the following session.

 

You should address the following questions in your presentation:

Where and when did you go?

What was the event?

What was special about the event?

Why do you classify this event as a cultural event?  

 

Grading key to convert number grades of your exam or final grades into letter grades: 0-59 F, 60-62 D-, 63-66 D, 67-68 D+, 69-72 C-, 73-76 C, 77-78 C+, 79-82 B-, 83-86 B, 87-88 B+, 89-92 A-, 93-96 A, 97-100 A+

For your paper you receive letter grades. If you are interested, here the key to convert the letter grades into number grades: A+ 100, A 93, A- 90, B+ 88, B 83, B -80, C+ 78, C 73, C- 70, D+ 68, D 63, D-60, F 60.
