Confederacy of Dunces: A Virtual Tour

A Confederacy of Dunces is a novel written by John Kennedy Toole in 1969.  If you have not read Confederacy, do so immediately.  Ignatius J. Reilly is one of the great literary characters of our time.  This page does neither the novel nor its distinctive hero justice.  My talents as a photographer are no match for Toole's talents as a writer and, thus, the pictures shown here pale in comparison to those drawn by the words of Mr. Toole.

In the beginning of the novel Ignatius is waiting for his mother near the clock at D. H. Holmes.

Officer Mancuso observes Ignatius from behind a pillar at D. H. Holmes

Ignatius and his mother stop for a drink at a Bourbon Street club, "The Night of Joy."  Ignatius asks for a Dr. Nut, but they claim not to have any.

After their drink, Ignatius and his mother return to their car, turning the corner from Bourbon Street on to St. Ann.

On his way to the Reilly house, Patrolman Mancuso goes down St. Charles Avenue and remarks about the beauty of the ancient oaks.

Ignatius and his mother live in a small house on Constantinople between St. Charles and the river.

There is no reason to believe that this is the Reilly house, other than that it is small and in the right neighborhood.

Ignatius "enjoys" a film at the Prytania.

Mr. Levy, the owner of Levy Pants, lives in a home that overlooks Bay St. Louis.

Ignatius gets a job selling hot dogs from a push cart.

Ignatius confronts members of the Ladies' Art Guild in Pirate Alley, where they have hung their "art" on the fence that surrounds the St. Louis Cathedral.

Ignatius rests on the side steps of the cathedral.

Timmy drifts down Chartres near the cathedral.

George hides from Mancuso behind one of the Cabildo's arches.

Dorian Greene lives in a three story stucco house on St. Peter.  So do Billy Truehard, Frieda Club, Betty Bumper, and Liz Steele.

Myrna takes Ignatius out of New Orleans on Rte 11 over Lake Pontchartrain.
