Labor Wars 2001-2003

Baseball fans ask for Presidential intervention on the eve of the 2003 aggrement. Happily a last minute aggreement prevented a strike. You can view an Adobe copy of the 2003-2006 Basic Agreement available from the SABR Business of Baseball Site.

Earlier labor wars

Doug Pappas, Chairman of SABR's Business of Baseball Committee since its start in 1994 offers an excellent Business of Baseball Page. Especially useful is his section on 2001-2002 Contraction and Labor.

Sports Illustrated overs a capsule view of the main differences in its feature "Owners and Players."

Owners and players have been battling over who gets the revenue since the first paid admissions of the 1860s. One of the best ways to following the current round is through newspapers. A useful guide to contemporary newspaper coverage of sports is Rick Johnson's sports pages.com. For example Ken Daley of the Dallas Morning News has offered particularly insightful coverage of the 2002 dispute.

Chris Isidore of CNNMoney offers useful columns examining the business aspects of sports.

The Washington Post and New York Times are especially useful. Also very useful are the publications listed in my General Baseball History Links section and the official sites of Major League Baseball and of the the Major League Baseball Players Association. The MLB site includes the report of the Commissioner's Blue Ribbon Panel and the MLPA site includes links to a reading list of contemporary articles. Also check out the Labor Wars section of this page.

The Baseball Prospectus Online offers a large number of articles on finances and labor.
